Fight deepfakes or face action, govt tells social media, Net cos

The government has warned top social media and internet companies that their platforms may be temporarily suspended and even be ordered blocked in case they are unable to tackle the menace of deepfakes. Besides, they have been advised to work out methods to issue “pop-ups” for users once they log into their accounts. The pop-ups, akin to the cautionary advice that users get when they log into their online financial investment accounts such as Zerodha, will carry the ‘no go list’ for subscribers, explicitly giving out details on what kind of content is not to be uploaded, or shared.
