Cyclone Jawad live: Heavy rain lashes parts of Odisha, Bengal

Kolkata and the coastal districts of Bengal could be lashed by intense showers today even as a low-pressure area — a ‘remnant’ of Cyclone Jawad that moved towards the state along the Odisha coast on Sunday evening — nears the Bengal coast at midnight on Sunday. The showers in Kolkata, though, could lose intensity by the second half of Monday and cease completely by Tuesday morning, said the Met office. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over coastal and northern districts of Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts for today. SC slams trial courts for seeking needless custody

The Supreme Court on Tuesday expressed shock over some trial courts not complying with its July 2022 order to be liberal and grant bail to accused in cases when custody is not needed.
